2021: A new era in the fight against single-use plastics

2021 will mark a before and after in the consumption of single-use plastics. The European Parliament approved on March 27 the agreement reached with the Council of the European Union by which, as of 2021, items such as cutlery and single-use plastics, drinking straws, cotton swabs for the ears made of plastic, plastic sticks for balloons, oxodegradable plastics – which produce microplastics when they disappear -, food containers and polystyrene cups.

In addition, it is established that Member States will be obliged to recover 90% of plastic bottles in 2029. In 2025, 25% of the plastic in bottles will have to be recycled and 30% in 2030. Manufacturers will also be obliged to include in the labeling warnings about the environmental impact of plastic cups, wet wipes and sanitary napkins, among other products.

Plastics in the sea, a very real problem

The European Commission estimates that more than 80% of the garbage found in the sea is plastic. Products covered by this new legislation constitute 70% of total marine debris.

The Spanish state is the fifth state in the European Union (EU) with the highest annual consumption of disposable packaging. Specifically, 3.8 billion plastic bottles are consumed, according to data from the Seas at Risk platform. Of these, only 33% are recycled correctly and the rest end up in landfills or in the environment.

Reducing the use of plastic is very important because it has a harmful environmental impact and a high carbon footprint. Plastics are materials derived from hydrocarbons such as natural gas or organic compounds such as oil, whose exploitation is one of the largest CO2 emitters on the planet. Currently, plastic production accounts for 3.8% of carbon emissions and it is estimated that by 2050 it will be responsible for 13% of them.

The throwaway culture is no longer sustainable. In addition to applying the new regulations, as citizens we have to start rethinking the way we consume. There is another way to understand the world and take care of it. As we explained in this blog post, some examples that can be easily put into practice are replacing single-use plastic bags for reusable ones, giving preference to buying food in bulk, use organic cosmetics that do not produce microplastics, and use ecological cleaning products whose containers are not made of plastic, such as Flopp’s.

Back to the origins: reuse

One of the most interesting ways to achieve the goal is to promote the culture of reuse to directly reduce the amount of plastic that is put into circulation. Some companies have been working for years on solutions that are less harmful to the environment, but that are equally comfortable for the consumer. This is the case of Careli, whose environmental commitment is translated into several lines of action:

The FLOPP ECO range is the first range of products certified with the European ecological label and with a 100% biodegradable and compostable packaging. This range consists of FLOPP Lavavajillas Gel ECOFLOPP Ropa ECO, FLOPP Ropa Bebé ECO, FLOPP Suelos Universal ECO and FLOPP Suelos Universal PH Neutro ECO.

The European ecological label ECOLABEL allows consumers to choose those products with the least impact on the environment, since their manufacture requires less consumption of water, raw materials and energy.

All the products in the FLOPP ECO range are presented in water-soluble capsules, which achieve superior cleaning without dirtying the planet, and in a 100% biodegradable and compostable container that can be disposed of in the brown container.

FLOPP Bac is a multi-purpose cleaner concentrated in capsules, which combines cleaning power with maximum sanitation, without bleach. Suitable for all types of surfaces, and can also be used for cleaning floors by diluting the capsule in a bucket with 4 or 5 liters of water. It has a pleasant clean perfume.

FLOPP Multiusos is designed to clean all types of surfaces in the home. It is a concentrated product, with great cleaning power, and that leaves a pleasant clean smell.

The basis of the FLOPP BAC and FLOPP MULTIUSOS system are the water-soluble single-dose capsules, which are diluted in 750 ml of water in a spray bottle. Consumers will be able to purchase the product in a kit, consisting of a capsule and a plastic bottle made from 100% recycled and 100% recyclable material, or the product refills, in 100% recycled and 100% recyclable cardboard boxes, of a capsule. The mixture of water and the capsule makes it possible to prepare 750ml of ready-to-use product.

With FloppBac and Flopp Multiusos we directly reduce the number of plastic bottles that are put into circulation, and by boosting the cuheight of reuse.

The reusable FLOPP BAC and FLOPP Multiusos bottle is made of 100% recycled PET and is 100% recyclable. The PET plastic used is obtained from the circuits of selective collection of containers (PCR-post consumer recycled), thus promoting the philosophy of the circular economy and respect for the environment.

With the purchase of a single bottle and refills and the rest of FLOPP products, subsequent single-use plastic containers can be saved, with the consequent reduction of C02 emissions derived from the unnecessary transport of the water usually present in the formulation of cleaning products.

Can you imagine the amount of plastic that is generated in your house only with cleaning products? There is another way of understanding the world. Discover FLOPP and Clean Without Dirtying the Planet.
