More than 70% of emerging infectious diseases in humans in the last forty years have been transmitted by animals, according to the latest and powerful report published by WWF. Clear examples of this are the latest Ebola outbreak, AIDS, SARS, avian flu, swine flu, and COVID-19, produced by the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
What is the origin of this trend? The alteration of ecosystems by the direct destruction of habitats resulting from agricultural and livestock intensification, together with the consequent loss of biodiversity and the palpable consequences of climate change create the perfect storm conditions to increase the risk of the appearance of communicable infectious diseases to the human being.
Although viruses and bacteria have lived with us forever, if habitats are well preserved and different species are related in balance, viruses are distributed among different species and do not affect humans. But when an imbalance occurs, due to the destruction or alteration of nature, natural ecosystems are weakened, thus facilitating the spread of pathogens and also increasing the risk of contact and transmission to people.
COVID-19, according to most scientific experts, originated when someone consumed some type of wild animal (pangolin or bat) in a Chinese market. This is a common route for the spread of pandemics, which usually follows this pattern:
The process begins with deforestation to obtain natural resources, agriculture, and fishing, or construction of communication routes, which directly affects the disappearance of species and causes human beings to come into contact with species to which they are not accustomed. Trafficking in these species puts humans in contact with wild species, which can be vectors of transmission of different diseases. Furthermore, the context of climate change makes it easier for new species to appear in unusual places, due to the preference for warm habitats of viruses and bacteria, which can transmit previously unknown or disappeared pathologies.
As the relationship between the destruction of nature and the spread of the zoonosis phenomenon has been demonstrated, it seems evident that we all must take action to take better care of our environment, to stop climate change, change the current production and consumption model.
